A tough job for Prime Minister Theresa May

(VOVWORLD) - UK Prime Minister Theresa May is scheduled to meet the European Council on Thursday to seek some changes in the Brexit deal. Just a day earlier Ms May survived a confidence vote by the ruling Conservative Party.

The vote of confidence took place after the British Prime Minister decided to delay the parliamentary vote on the Brexit deal scheduled for December 11, due to the likelihood that more than 100 out of 317 MPs in the Conservative Party would vote against the deal. These MPs have insisted that the deal will keep the UK tied to the EU indefinitely and not free to negotiate trade with non-EU countries.

Domestic barriers

Despite a split among British politicians over the draft Brexit deal reached on November 25, the support of 63% of Conservative MPs for Ms. May indicates that they want her to continue with Brexit. Supporters called May’s survival of the vote of confidence an important victory for her. They called on the Conservative Party to stay united and support May’s agenda.

Following the vote, the Prime Minister said that she will continue with the Brexit plan but will also take into consideration the concerns of the opposing MPs.

Challenges of Brexit

May still needs to have the Brexit plan approved by the House of Commons, which will not be easy. She insists she is making progress in talks with EU leaders, but her recent trip to the Netherlands, Germany, and the Republic of Ireland showed that major changes to the draft Brexit deal are unlikely. The results of Prime Minister May’s meeting with the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte were not revealed. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel said any Brexit agreement needs to be signed with the EU, not bilaterally with individual EU members. Ms. Merkel said there’s no way to change the deal signed between the UK and the EU on November 25.

A spokesperson for the European Committee said the EU will not renegotiate the Brexit deal, emphasizing that the deal is already the best and most feasible deal for the UK.

It seems unlikely that May will win any concessions at the UK-EU meeting on Thursday to discuss an alternative plan for the Ireland border.
