Located atop Hai Van Pass, 490 meters above sea level, the Hai Van Gate National Historical Relic is managed jointly by Da Nang city and Thua Thien-Hue province. It’s a popular stop for both domestic and international tourists traveling by road. The Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945) constructed Hai Van Gate in this strategic location to control the North-South Road and Da Nang Bay. Over time and through periods of wars, the relic has deteriorated.

Tran Thi Ngoc Yen of Da Nang City, who frequently visits Hai Van Gate with her family, said: "Before the restoration, I visited the site every year. Today, Hai Van Gate has been restored and upgraded and is clean, majestic and attractive."

In late 2021, the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang City and the Hue Monuments Conservation Center in Thua Thien-Hue province collaborated on a project to revive the Hai Van Gate relic. The project aimed to faithfully replicate the original Nguyen Dynasty structures by restoring the main gate, the highest watchtower, the main office, the armory, and various fortifications and pathways.

Bui Van Tieng, Chairman of the Da Nang City History Science Association, said the restoration was meticulous.

Tieng said: "The two localities have been very careful in restoring the relic. There are contributions of archeology and bibliography. Items that were lost have now been replicated. The restored relic site will be a popular destination for tourists exploring the beauty of Hai Van Mountain and Hai Van Gate."

The restoration of Hai Van Gate has revived the grandeur and majesty of this crucial defense system south of the Hue Citadel. According to the Hue Monuments Conservation Center and the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang City, visitors can visit the Hai Van Gate relic site free of charge until the end of the year.
