Helping children cope with the pandemic’s emotional stress

(VOVWORLD) - Children in many parts of Vietnam are not allowed to go out of their house because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The necessity of studying online has stressed them and threatened their physical and mental health.

Nguyen Phuong Linh, Director of the Research Center for Management and Sustainable Development, said there are many arising issues related to children’s health and life skills, and the implementation of child protection policies.

"The pandemic has had a visible impact on children’s physical and mental health, particularly children in lockdown areas. If the lockdown lasts too long, staying at home can make them depressed and stressed and affect their motor function. These consequences can have a long-term effect on their growth. State agencies, social organizations, businesses, families, schools, and the community should share responsibility for easing the pandemic’s effect on children, said Linh.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made many childrenorphans, triggering a grief that is very difficult to overcome.

"I think caretakers should understand the children’s psychology, gain their trust, and help them face the death of their relatives. The children need time to heal and learn that they are not alone. The most valuable thing is people’s caring and love, making them feel secure and sharing their emotions. Gradually they can adapt to a new life," Linh recommended.

Since last April, the Department of Children at the Ministry of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs has worked with social organizations to care for and protect children at quarantine facilities and children orphaned by COVID-19.

National programs have called on individuals and organizations to provide immediate support for these children. New policies and long-term programs are being worked out to care for them until they are adults.
