Fishermen's awareness of IUU fishing improves

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam has strengthened efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing to have the EU’s “yellow card” lifted. In Quang Tri province, local authorities are rolling out comprehensive measures to combat IUU fishing, while stepping up communication and support for fishermen in transitioning to more sustainable livelihoods and reduce pressure on marine resources.

Due to ignorance of the law and the need to make a living, some fishermen have suffered serious consequences for a wrong decision. Nguyen Van Hanh, a resident of Dong Trach commune, Quang Tri province, is serving a three-year prison sentence for IUU fishing. The burden of making ends meet now weighs heavily on his family.

“I was wrong. If I ever have another chance to go back to sea, I will comply with the rules to fish only in Vietnamese waters, and never dare to violate foreign waters again. This was my first time in such a situation. The court has handed down the sentence. I fully realize my wrongdoing, which also affected Vietnam’s image internationally. Regret now comes too late. I have brought more burden on my wife and children,” said Hanh.

To combat IUU fishing, Quang Tri province has sealed unqualified fishing vessels and implemented strict control measures to eliminate violations.

Tran Thanh Tam, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Nam Gianh commune, said: “The commune has inspected vessels and sealed those that do not meet operating conditions. The local authorities have strengthened communication and reminded vessel owners and captains of their responsibility to comply with regulations on anti-IUU fishing.”

Quang Tri province is promoting occupational transition for workers on vessels that no longer meet operating requirements. The authorities of Nam Cua Viet commune help farmers develop sustainable aquaculture on an area of 800 hectares.

Dang Huy Bang, Head of the Economic Division of Nam Cua Viet commune, said: “The commune has introduced multiple solutions, including reviewing current aquaculture areas and developing sustainable shrimp farming models. The commune teaches people to build high-tide ponds for sustainable intensive farming.”

In Quang Tri province, fishermen whose vessels are deteriorated and no longer meet safety or technical requirements will be helped to sell their vessels and pursue an alternative livelihood. More than 98% of fishing vessels in Quang Tri are licensed for fisheries exploitation.
