(VOVworld) – The market of ornamental trees and flowers has grown busier two weeks before Tet (Lunar New year festival).

In Hanoi, horticulture markets like Nghi Tam, Quang Ba, and Hoang Hoa Tham are selling Tet flowers and trees: peach and apricot blossoms, orchids, and kumquat trees, and many other varieties of flowers with prices ranging from 3 to 200 USD per bunch or per pot. Dang Van Tien, owner of a kumquat garden in Nhat Tan village on the outskirt of Hanoi, said: “People come here to buy kumquat trees, because, traditionally, kumquats represent Vietnamese Tet.”
Imported roses are a hot item this year because of their rarity. Dang Thi Thao, owner of a flower garden in Quang Ba, Hanoi, said she has grown 200 types of roses, which may last the whole winter month: “The sale of roses has been on the rise recently and will increase as Tet draws near. The price of a one-year-old rose tree is about 16 USD. A two-year-old peony tree is 30 USD.”

Thousands of horticulture businesses in Ho Chi Minh city are busy with their harvests. In Cu Chi district, which has 25,000 ha of flowers, authorities are helping local growers to form specialized flower and ornamental tree value chain. Nguyen Huu Phu, Chairman of the Cu Chi district People’s Committee, said: “For the past several years, we have been shifting to growing orchids, particularly Mokara orchids. Our orchid cultivation area has expanded to 187ha and will double or triple by 2020.”
