Being a responsible member of the UN, Vietnam has made considerable contributions to the organization’s development. Vietnam was one of the 8 countries that voluntarily piloted the UN Initiative on Uniform Action in 2006 and became a role model for this initiative thanks to its outstanding achievements in implementing UN Millennium Development Goals. Vietnam also fulfilled its tasks as a Non-Permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2008-2009 term. Vietnam has actively cooperated with Non-aligned and developing countries to protect fundamental principles of the UN Charter as well as principles on sovereignty equity and non-interference into other’s internal affairs, prohibition of threat or use of force and protection of the interests of developing countries, including Vietnam.

The cooperation between Vietnam and the UN is a good example of development cooperation between UN member countries and the UN’s role in promoting international cooperation to resolve economic, social, cultural and humanity issues. This cooperation has contributed greatly to Vietnam’s industrialization and modernization and to increasing the UN’s role in the new era.

In this context, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s attendance at the 68th UN General Assembly is important as it is a chance for Vietnam to enhance its external policies, raise its prestige, and show that Vietnam is a proactive and responsible member of the UN. It is also an opportunity for Vietnam to boost its relations with the UN and its agencies. Prime Minister Dung’s speech at the General Assembly will touch upon Vietnam’s experience in carrying out the MDGs and highlight the importance of building strategic trust to strengthen peace and resolve conflicts. PM Dung’s meetings on the sidelines of the high-level meetings will create a good opportunity for fostering relations with other nations and garner international support for Vietnam's development and global integration. Ambassador Le Hoai Trung said: “The Prime Minister will hold meetings with the UN Secretary General, leaders of the UN Development Program, the UN Fund for Population Affairs, and the UN Children’s Fund. They will discuss Vietnam’s experience in cooperating with the UN. In regard to international peace and security issues, Vietnam, as an ASEAN member, will introduce the process of building an ASEAN community on three pillars. Vietnam will share its experience in implementing the MDGs, its contributions to the UN and UN peace keeping activities.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will hold dialogues with US businesses to introduce Vietnam’s policies on renovation, stabilizing the macro economy, changing the growth model for sustainable development, and investment incentives.

Vietnam’s participation at the 68th UN General Assembly is expected to be a success, which will create favorable conditions for Vietnam’s renovation to boost its socio-economic development, industrialization and modernization. At this session, Vietnam will show its active role in the common struggle of people around the world for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress.
