(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations was established on October 24, 1945 with the noble goals of maintaining international peace and security and creating a stable and sustainable environment for cooperation and development worldwide. Vietnam has always been a reliable partner and active member of the UN since it joined the organization in 1977.
President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres co-chair the ceremony commemorating the 45th anniversary of Vietnam's membership in the United Nations. |
With outstanding achievements over 77 years of development, the UN has affirmed its important role in international politics and is an indispensable foundation of world peace, prosperity, justice, cooperation, and development.
Important role in international political life
The UN has played a more important role in the context of rapid and unpredictable developments worldwide. To mark its 77th anniversary the UN highlights multilateralism, peace, security, and international cooperation in implementing commitments and agreements, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It says the world needs to unite to address the devastating consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, mitigate the harmful effects of climate change on lives and livelihoods, and resolve conflicts.
Vietnam proudly shares the goals of the UN
Joining the UN opened a new chapter in Vietnam’s relations with the world and increased international support for the country’s national reconstruction.
The UN has always been the top partner helping Vietnam achieve sustainable development goals and address social security, poverty reduction, and climate change issues.
Vietnam has contributed to strengthening the UN’s role and building an international legal system and standards to ensure justice, development, peace, and security.
President Nguyen Xuan Phuc said at a ceremony last Friday to mark Vietnam’s 45th year of UN membership: “More than ever we expect the UN to play a central role in global management and be a nucleus for unifying the world and a focal point for multilateral efforts to strengthen peace, security, and development cooperation for a world without wars, injustice, poverty, or backwardness. Cooperation with the UN has always been an important part of Vietnam’s external policies. We’ll strive to effectively cooperate with the UN and contribute to resolving challenges to global peace, cooperation, and development.”
Vietnam is a reliable and responsible partner in attaining the UN and implementing the UN’s sustainable development goals. Vietnam is a top exporter of agricultural products, and contributor to regional and global food security. It is pioneering efforts to reform the UN and serve on the UN Security Council and Human Rights Council.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said during his recent visit to Vietnam that Vietnam has come a long way, and its development path will continue. Vietnam could represent new values. The UN is proud to partner with Vietnam to help Vietnam restructure its economy and change the world.
Vietnam will continue to play an active role in working with the UN to promote multilateralism and international cooperation toward a more peaceful and prosperous world.
