Speaking at a press conference during her visit to Vietnam, Vice President Harris said she is the first US Vice President to visit Vietnam since the two countries normalized ties in 1995. She said she believes the visit will open a new chapter in bilateral ties, and reiterated the US’s strong commitment to maintaining and strengthening the relationship because it matters to the people, security, and prosperity of Vietnam and the US. Since the normalization of bilateral ties, the two countries have obtained wonderful achievements together and are now ready to face present and future challenges.

In 2013, former State President Truong Tan Sang and former US President Barack Obama established the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership. At that time, no one anticipated that Vietnam-US ties would move as fast as they have. Many American diplomats say that since that day they have seen strong changes in Vietnam, including strong economic growth, a greater role in the region and the world, more American visitors to Vietnam, and more Vietnamese students studying in the US.

Former US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius said that in Vietnam-US ties, there’s nothing impossible. Several years ago the two established a Comprehensive Partnership, mapping out 9 years of cooperation which have progressed steadily. Osius said the US wants to bring the Vietnam-US relationship beyond the bilateral cooperation framework toward what the two can do together for the region and the world.
