Rang Dong and its journey to conquer international market

(VOVWORLD) - The Rang Dong Light Source and Vacuum Flask Joint Stock Company, formerly the Rang Dong Light Source and Vacuum Flask Factory, has been a pioneer in the lighting industry in Vietnam for 60 years. Starting with incandescent light bulbs and thermos bottles, Rang Dong now produces a wide variety of products that are sold all over the world.

The Rang Dong Light Source and Vacuum Flask Factory was begun in Hanoi in 1958. Three years later, on February 24, 1961, it began operations, becoming the first factory in Indochina to produce light bulbs and thermos flasks.

Rang Dong is the only lighting manufacturer in Vietnam to use Ansys Icepak thermal management software in LED design. Ansys Icepak is a US software tool that does thermal simulations for complex products like cars, airplanes, and ships.

Rang Dong LED products use Samsung LED chips that meet photobiological safety standards, ensuring a ratio of blue light that creates a lighting environment that’s safe for eyes.

Chairman of Vietnam Automation Association Dr. Nguyen Quan, a former Minister of Science and Technology, talked about Rang Dong products that are researched and designed in Vietnam.

He noted that Rang Dong has established four science and technology centers and once spent 20% of its after-tax profit on science and technology development and technological innovation.

“Not all enterprises can do this. It has invited scientists from institutes, universities, and major science and technology centers in Vietnam to work with Rang Dong. The company has presented thousands of technical innovations and scientific research results at innovation festivals and scientific conferences,” according to Quan.

Rang Dong exports LED and other electronic products to the Middle East, China, South Korea, Cuba, Sri Lanka, and the US. In 2018, it became a member of the International Solid-State Lighting Alliance (ISA).

It owns the technology for environment-friendly electric glass production and the most modern thermos production line in Vietnam, with a production capacity of 18.5 million products per year, which are sold in Vietnam and exported to Japan, China, Indonesia, Brazil, and Pakistan.

Nguyen Doan Thang, the company’s Director General, attributes the company’s success to prioritizing the production of green, environmentally friendly products, and promoting digital transformation.

“Pursuant to the Government's digital transformation program, since 2020 we’ve begun to conduct digital transformation for the company by synchronizing each part that has been extended,” said Thang, adding, “In a couple of years, we’ll synchronize the whole assembly line. We’ve transformed from a traditional industrial factory specialized in producing light bulbs and thermoses into an electronic industrial factory on modern production lines. This is a fundamental change. More particularly, we’ve applied AI to production.”

Rang Dong is one of Vietnam’s enterprises that have seen fast, sustainable growth. In 2004, when it was newly equitized, it earned revenues of 16.1 million USD. In 2023, despite the COVID-19 epidemic, Rang Dong earned an impressive 334 million USD, up 20-fold from 2004.

Nguyen Duc Hien, former Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission, praised Rang Dong as an example of private enterprise becoming a driver of Vietnam's socialist-oriented market economy.

“Rang Dong has built a business culture, upheld national growth aspirations, and set up harmonious relations between employers and employees. Rang Dong has pioneered digital transformation and participation in the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” said Hien.

To maintain its brand, Rang Dong has made quality the top priority of its development strategy. Rang Dong spends 2% of its annual revenue on state-of-the-art equipment and 20% of its profit after tax on developing new technology and closely coordinating with domestic and foreign experts in researching and designing new products.

Mr. Thang said, “Rang Dong aims to become a high-tech, pioneering digital enterprise by 2025, with an annual growth rate of 20-25%. By 2030, the Rang Dong brand will be at the Southeast Asian level, with revenues of 1 billion USD and an average worker salary of 2,000 USD per month. Rang Dong must become a national enterprise carrying the Vietnamese brand.”

In 2024, Rang Dong hopes to earn revenues of 443 million USD, up 32% from last year, and contribute 20 million USD to the State budget. The company is ranked in the TOP 500 largest enterprises in Vietnam, TOP 10 pioneering enterprises deploying digital technology, and TOP 25 leading brands.
