Kon Ha Nung Plateau recognized by UNESCO as Vietnam’s new Biosphere Reserve
(VOVWORLD) - Kon Ha Nung Plateau in the Central Highland province of Gia Lai represents one of two Vietnamese lo biosphere reserves which have won the official recognition of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The 413,500-hectare Kon Ha Nung Plateau is home to two nationally-protected sites, Kon Ka Kinh National Park and Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve, which serve as its core areas. |
UNESCO officially recognises Kon Ha Nung Plateau as one of world’s biosphere reserves on September 15, 2021. |
The reserve features a closed subtropical humid evergreen forest ecosystem which remains relatively intact. |
The flora and fauna found in Kon Ha Nung Plateau are both rich and diverse whilst boasting an array of rare species. |
The plateau is home to thousands of animal species, including rare ones such as douc langurs. |
There are many beautiful waterfalls, all of which serve as extremely attractive eco-tourism destinations. |
12 waterfalls are located in Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve alone, all of which stand at over 15 metres in height, thereby leaving an impression of wild and poetic beauty among visitors. |
The plateau is also home to plenty ethnic minority groups, mainly the Bahnar and Jrai. |
The gong culture space of ethnic groups in the Central Highlands plateau is recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. |
