13th National Party Congress discusses poverty reduction

(VOVWORLD) - The 13th National Party Congress on Thursday continued its discussion of poverty reduction and ensuring social security.

Do Duc Duy, Secretary of the Yen Bai provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Yen Bai provincial People's Council, said Yen Bai considers poverty reduction one of the most important political tasks and the top priority of socio-economic development. After implementing the national target program on sustainable poverty reduction for the 2016-2020 period, Yen Bai province has reduced its percentage of poor households to 7.04%, ranking 12th nationally, up 6 positions since 2016, according to Mr. Duy. Yen Bai province has deployed measures to reduce poverty and raise awareness, especially among ethnic minority people. To fulfil the 2021-2025 poverty reduction goal in accordance with the 13th National Party Congress Resolution, Mr. Duy said:

“The central government should continue to invest in mountainous provinces. Priorities include building transportation systems to connect mountainous provinces and poor localities; expanding the national power grid; forecasting and mitigating natural disasters; responding to climate change; and evacuating people in areas at high risk of floods and landslides.”

Dao Ngoc Dung, Minister of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs said that to become a developing country with modern industry and high­-middle income by 2030, Vietnam needs to continue to innovate, improve its social development management, and make people the center and driving force of development. He said.' We should implement comprehensive, sustainable solutions and policies for poverty reduction; improve people’s livelihood and happiness; reduce direct support and create sustainable livelihoods for the poor; narrow gaps in income, living standards, and living conditions; and focus on sustainable poverty reduction in core poverty areas and among ethnic minorities.'
