From Monday through Wednesday, they will be reunited with their siblings and family members from the North, after many decades of separation since the inception of the 1950-1953 Korean War. Another reunion will take place later this week. The two countries so far have held 21 inter-Korean reunions, including video meetings, since 1985. The reunion event could finally take place again, thanks to the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration between President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

In another development, a South Korean presidential spokesman said Monday, that the planned establishment of an inter-Korean liaison office in the North Korean border city of Kaesong, does not constitute a violation of sanctions on North Korea. Kim Eui-kyeom told reporters that establishing a liaison office is a basic project aimed at easing military tensions and bringing permanent peace to the Korean Peninsula, and that maintaining constant communication between the South and the North would contribute to facilitating denuclearization negotiations between the North and the US.
