29 killed in attack on Iranian military parade

(VOVWORLD) -At least 29 people were killed and 57 others wounded in an attack on a military parade in Iran's southwestern city of Ahvaz on Saturday, Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency reported.

The dead and wounded were both military personnel and civilians including many children and women. Three of the attackers were gunned down during clashes with the security forces and one other was arrested and died in hospital. The Islamic State terrorist group and the Ahvaz National Movement rebel group claimed responsibility for the attack.

President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday vowed highest level response and warned that anyone who supported the terrorists should bear the responsibilities. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the incident involved US allies in the region. The Iranian government summoned the envoys of three European countries including UK, Netherlands and Denmark, and accused them of harboring radical opposition groups.

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered condolences to his Iranian counterpart and confirmed readiness to boost cooperation with Iran in war on terror. A UN representative in Iran sent condolences to officials and victim families.  On the same day, US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said that the US will support the Iranian people in their fight against radical Islamic terrorism and condemns all terrorist acts.
