53 people killed in highlands massacre in Papua New Guinea

(VOVWORLD) - Papua New Guinea police on Monday reported that at least 53 people have been killed in a massacre in the country's highlands.

Police believe the men were shot dead in an ambush in Enga province, in a major escalation of tribal fighting in the region.

They said that this could be the largest massacre in Papua New Guinea’s recent history.

Police have called on provincial and local leaders in Enga to intervene with their people to calm tensions.
