The resolution recommending the release of 400 prisoners was passed on Sunday at the end of a three-day Loya Jirga, a traditional Afghan meeting of tribal elders and other stakeholders held to decide momentous issues.

In order to remove hurdles slowing the start of peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, and to end bloodshed, the Loya Jirga acceded to militant demands for the release of the 400 prisoners including 44 fighters of particular concern to the US and other countries for their role in high-profile attacks.

Negotiations between the Kabul administration and the Taliban are expected to begin late this week in Qatar.
