Air strike hit IS-run oil refinery in Syria

(VOVworld) - A US-led coalition air strike in Syria hit an oil refinery run by Islamic State (IS) near the border with Turkey on Sunday, killing 30 people, according to Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

He said the dead were refinery workers and IS militants, adding that the targeted refinery was just northeast of the town of Tel Abyad near the Turkish border. The territories are large controlled areas in northern and eastern Syria, including the oil-producing regions that have financed the group's activities.

Also on Sunday, an air strike by Syrian government forces killed 11 people and wounded at least 50 others in the town of Irbil, the IS-held area east of Damascus. Clashes were still under way near Aleppo in the villages of Handarat and Bashkoy between regime forces and fighters of the Al-Qaeda affiliate, the Al-Nusra Front.
