Angola's president Dos Santos expected to extend rule

Angola's incumbent President Jose Eduardo dos Santos is expected to win the general elections as provisional results showed his People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola MPLA party secured about 74 percent of votes in the elections held on Friday.

The National Electoral Commission said on Saturday that with provisional turnout at more than 57 percent, the MPLA won 74 percent of votes, followed by the main opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola party UNITA with nearly 18 percent.

During the national elections, Angolans vote for the 220-seat National Assembly, and the person heading the winning party is automatically elected as president.
