ASEAN, China to further strategic partnership

(VOVworld) - Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Vinh led the Vietnamese representatives to join the 19th ASEAN-China Senior Officials Meeting in Beijing which closed on Tuesday. At the meeting, both sides affirmed the importance of maintaining peace and security in the East Sea which will help boost the ASEAN-China strategic partnership.

Both sides pledged to implement the fully and effectively Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) including talks and consultancies and cooperation activities on DOC framework, towards Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (COC). ASEAN members said ASEAN will conduct COC negotiations with China for mutual trust and understanding. Vinh said Vietnam will coordinate with other ASEAN members and China to promote their strategic partnership including Action Plan 2011-2015 and other important commitments. The Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister urged ASEAN and China to continue cooperating to maintain peace and security in the East Sea and resolve disputes based on the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and fully and effectively implement the DOC and promptly start negotiations of COC and approve it. China re-affirmed the importance of its partnership with neighboring countries and said it considers ASEAN one of its foreign policy priorities. China supports ASEAN upholding its central role in the region and building an ASEAN community by 2015.
