(VOVworld) – Vietnamese ambassador to the US Pham Quang Vinh chaired a regular meeting of the ASEAN Committee in Washington on Thursday. This is the first meeting during Vietnam’s presidency from January to April, 2016. Delegates discussed the current context after the establishment of the ASEAN Community and the ASEAN-US strategic partnership and prior to the US-ASEAN Summit in California in February.
Representatives of ASEAN countries discussed the committee’s agenda in 2016 and exchanged notes with US officials on ways to promote the image of the ASEAN Economic Community in the US. Discussion topics included ways to deepen the ASEAN-US strategic partnership, support ASEAN and its central role in the region, and increase cooperation in priority areas set by the joint statement on the ASEAN-US Strategic Partnership, which include economic links, security, response to transnational challenges, education, training, and people-to-people exchanges.
