(VOVworld) - ASEAN uniting its members to address tensions in the East Sea was suggested at a recent international workshop in France.

The workshop was held by France’s Paul-Valerie Montpellier 3 University as part of International Francophone Week.

Participants evaluated the situation in the East Sea, sovereignty disputes, and escalating risks in the region.

Sophie Boisseau de Rocher of the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) suggested devising a management mechanism.

Benoit de Treglode from the Institute for Strategic Research of the French Defense Academy said parties should seek marine cooperation and mutual trust, especially with China.

Speakers agreed that ASEAN will be a stronger organization if its members are more united and present a common front in negotiating with China.

They said ASEAN could play a crucial role in forging relations with the US, Europe, and China.
