(VOVworld) - A forum on sustainable development in the central coastal region was held in the central province of Quang Nam on Tuesday.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, World Bank Country Director for Vietnam, Victoria Kwakwa, the Asia Development Bank’s Country Director for Vietnam, Tomoyuki Kimura, and representatives from relevant ministries and agencies attended the event. Discussions at the forum focused on boosting regional sustainable development, strengthening the connectivity of transport infrastructure for socio-economic development in the new context and developing water resources in association with mitigating natural disasters in the central coastal area. The event also gave delegates a chance to share their experiences in mobilizing human resources, managing the risks of natural calamities and water resource sustainably to promote economic development and contribute to poverty reduction. Deputy Prime Minister Phuc said: “Localities should integrate their zoning plans with the region’s master plan to create economic connectivity. They should also devise specific measures to deal with climate change and natural disasters as well as protect the environment in line with national target programs. Human resource development is also essential for boosting growth.

With regard to China’s illegal placement of oilrig Haiyang 981 in Vietnamese waters, Mr. Phuc said that Vietnam insists on peaceful measures to defuse tension. He said that the lives of thousands of Vietnamese fishermen in central provinces are in danger. This requires the region to boost sustainable economic development in coastal areas while consolidating national defense and sustainable poverty reduction.
