Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Parvathaneni Harish said the honor is in recognition of Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien’s contributions to religion and closer Buddhist cooperation between India and Vietnam.
The Padma Shri is an award normally presented to Indian citizens with outstanding achievements in science, literature, the arts, education, health, diplomacy, industry, trade, or social work. In 2018, the award is granted to ASEAN citizens on the occasion of the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit. Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien is the first Vietnamese to receive the honor.
