Troops moved into the Place de la Nation in Ouagadougou, setting up barricades and removing thousands of people gathered to denounce the army's power grab after the turbulent ouster of President Blaise Compaore. The deposed president fled to neighboring Ivory Coast amid protests. UN envoy for West Africa Mohamed Ibn Chambas urged a civilian transfer of power and threatened to impose sanctions if the army continues to hold power in Burkina Faso.
