(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday that Canada stands ready to resume trade talks with the United States after President Donald Trump announced an additional 10% in tariffs on Canada and vowed to end all negotiations between the US and Canada.
At the 47th ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Carney said he’s ready to sit down for trade talks with Trump as soon as the US President is prepared to do so. He said he hadn’t met President Trump in Malaysia but would meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC Summit in South Korea on Wednesday to discuss trade and "the evolution of the global system."
US tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars have hurt Canada’s economy, leading to job cuts. Prime Minister Carney said both sides had made good progress in talks earlier, especially on steel, aluminum, and energy.
