The explosion came on the eve of the third anniversary of the 2011 uprising to oust President Hosni Mubarak. An al-Qaeda-linked militant group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has admitted carrying out the attack. Prior to that, the Muslin Brotherhood (MB) called for demonstrations on Friday to mark the anniversary of the uprising against Mubarak’s regime.

Egypt is suffering from severe divisions between pro-Morsi Muslims and military supporters. Since Morsi was toppled in July 2013, more than 1,000 people have been killed in street clashes. Thousands of people were sentenced to imprisonment, including Morsi and other MB leaders.
