(VOVworld) – the Japanese and Chinese Foreign Ministries held meetings in Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss the recent increased tensions over a territorial dispute. Shinsuke Sugiyama, the director-general of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, led the Japanese delegation to meet with his Chinese counterpart is Luo Zhaohui, director general of the Chinese Foreign Ministry's Asian Affairs Department. Although details of their meetings have not yet been released, observers say that Sugiyama put forward two scenarios in which the Senkaku islands would be either nationalized or purchased by Tokyo. The Mayor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, who is a well-known nationalist politician announced the construction of building works on the islands. In the view of the Japanese Government, buying Senkaku Island will reduce the tensions with China. In his address to the press, Sugiyama said the meetings had produced some positive results, however, tensions are likely to rise following the prolonged postponement of a series of exchanges between the two countries.
