Chinese, Russian leaders hold online talks following US President Donald Trump’s inauguration

(VOVWORLD) - Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held their first online talks of the year, shortly after US President Donald Trump took office.

During the discussion, President Xi emphasized his commitment to work closely with President Putin to elevate China-Russia relations to a new strategic level in order to strengthen stability and resilience of their bilateral ties in order to respond to uncertainties in the global environment, together promoting the prosperity of both nations while upholding international equality and justice.

As the rotating chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Xi pledged to work with Russia and other member states to advance the organization’s development with greater responsibility and capacity. He also called for joint efforts to strengthen "big BRICS cooperation" and foster solidarity and self-reliance in the Global South.

President Putin said Russia-China cooperation aligns with the interests of both peoples and is unaffected by changes in the international landscape.
