Coronavirus: China confirms 425 deaths as of Monday

(VOVWORLD) - Health authorities in Hubei province, China, announced Monday that coronavirus fatalities in the province had risen to 414 after 64 deaths were reported overnight – yet another daily record.

There have been 425 deaths caused by the virus in mainland China and one in the Philippines. In figures current as of midnight on Monday, the health commission of Hubei reported more than 2,300 new cases of infection, bringing the total in Hubei to more than 13,000.

At a meeting the same day, Xi Jinping, China’s General Secretary and President called for solidarity to defeat the virus. The Standing Committee of the Politburo said China has the capability to deal with this crisis.

Chinese health officials said that national pharmaceutical institutes have begun clinical trials of a drug called remdesivir that could be effective against the coronavirus.

China’s authorities have allocated 6.8 billion USD to fighting the epidemic.  

World Health Organization Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Monday that there is no need for measures that “unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade.”

Health ministers from the G7 agreed to coordinate with the WHO, the EU, and China to combat the outbreak, the German Health Ministry said.
