Countries pledge help to quake-hit Morocco

(VOVWORLD) - Countries around the world have offered to help Morocco, where a devastating earthquake has killed more than 2,000 people and injured thousands others.

In a joint statement, the G20 said they will mobilize “technical and financial tools and assistance in a coordinated way to help the people of Morocco overcome this terrible tragedy.”

The International Federation for Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)  has released over 1 million USD from its emergency disaster fund to support the Moroccan Red Crescent’s work on the ground.

Spain and Qatar have already sent rescue workers to Morocco. Meanwhile, the US, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Turkey, Poland, Israel, Iraq, and Jordan have also confirmed their support for Morocco.

The heads of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the African Union and the European Commission, together with the presidents of France and India, pledged in a joint statement to “mobilize technical and financial tools and assistance” to help Morocco.

The quake was the strongest to hit the North African country in the last century, according to Morocco’s National Geophysical Institute.
