COVID-19 claims more than 80 million lives worldwide

(VOVWORLD) - The COVID-19 had recorded 80.2 million infections and killed more than 1.7 million people worldwide on Saturday, according to statistics website worldometer.

The US remains the hardest hit nation, followed by India, and Brazil.

Russia, France, UK, Turkey, Italy have announced more than two million cases while Spain, Germany, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Poland, Iran, Ukraine and Peru has reported more than one million.

Currently, France and Switzerland have recorded the first infections with the new variant of SARS-CoV-2 which was first detected in the UK and believed to spread very quickly.

The new strain of the coronavirus has been detected in eight European countries, said Hans Kluge, WHO's Regional Director for Europe, stressing the need to boost the protective measures.
