Droupadi Murmu elected President of India

(VOVWORLD) - The National Democratic Alliance candidate Droupadi Murmu became the 15th President of India following a presidential election on Thursday.

Murmu, a 64-year-old teacher turned politician, is the first adivasi (aborigine) woman and second woman to hold the country’s highest office. Pratibha Patil was the first woman.

Murmu beat the opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, a former BJP finance minister, winning nearly twice as many votes

Murmu will take the oath of office next Monday (July 25), a day after president Ram Nath Kovind’s tenure ends.
