Egypt suffers worst protest wave ever

There were 1.432 demonstrations in Egypt in July with an average of 46 demonstrations a day. The figures released Friday in the Democracy Index report by the International Development Center reflect the worst wave of protests ever seen in human history. 30 million Egyptians nationwide were involved in protests opposing Mohamed Morsi’s administration and support for the transitional period mapped out by the army after the political upheaval in early July. Another 1 million protesters took to the streets to support Morsi and denounce what they described as a military coup against constitutional legitimacy.

Also on Friday, Egypt’s Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim met with security officials to disperse 2 sit-ins by the Muslim Brotherhood to protect civilians. The Egyptian cabinet on Thursday authorized the Interior Ministry to take all measures in line with the law and constitution to dissolve protests.
