(VOVWORLD) - European Union members have vowed to take in 34,400 refugees directly from North Africa and the Middle East, particularly from Libya and Niger.

Sixteen countries so far have offered to admit refugees to meet the European Commission's goal, announced in September, of taking in at least 50,000 refugees over the next two years. EU migration commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said the EU is exiting crisis mode gradually and they are now managing migration in a spirit of partnership and shared responsibility.
