EU unveils a clean energy packet of measures
(VOVworld) - The EU on Wednesday unveiled a plan to boost clean energy to meet its commitments to the Paris climate deal.
The Commission committed to cutting CO2 emissions by at least 40% by 2030. Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete said the proposed rules aim to make the EU the leader of the clean energy movement. The plan involves two main efforts: setting a regulatory framework to support renewable energy and promoting energy conservation.
The EU also aims to improve energy efficiency in buildings. Two-thirds of EU's buildings were built before energy standards existed, so the Commission wants to speed up renovation of existing buildings. This will create a renovation market for SMEs worth 80-120 billion euros in 2030.
