First National Conference on Foreign Affairs opens

(VOVWORLD) - The first National Conference on Foreign Affairs opened in Hanoi Tuesday.

In his address, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said: "It’s important to continue the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, development, multilateralization and diversification of relations, active and extensive international integration to serve national interests and promote cooperation and the fighting spirit. We need to further cooperation on the basis of mutual benefit between our countries and others, prevent conflict, and avoid confrontation, isolation, and dependence."

Mr. Trong added that Vietnam's inclusive goal is to maintain a peaceful, stable, and favorable environment to serve national construction and defense, realize strategic tasks on socio-economic development, and resolutely defend national independence, sovereignty, sovereignty rights, territorial integrity, and legitimate rights in line with international law.

The conference focused on the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress, especially those policies, guidelines, and orientations that are concerned with foreign affairs of the Party, the army, and people-to-people diplomacy.

Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee's Commission for External Relations Truong Quang Hoai Nam said: “The Communist Party of Vietnam's foreign affairs have continuously expanded and deepened, achieving many important results, contributing to strengthening political trust, building a political foundation, promoting foreign relations with neighboring countries, traditional friends, and important partners. In some cases, it really plays a key role in the overall direction for bilateral relations."

Mr. Nam added that foreign affairs have contributed to continuously improving the strength, position, and prestige of the nation and the Party, maintaining a peaceful and stable environment, firmly defending national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and protecting the Party, State, people, and socialism. They have improved the efficiency of Vietnam’s international integration and taken full advantage of international consensus.

Vietnam has set up diplomatic relations with 189 of the 193 members of the United Nations and maintains formal relationships with 30 strategic or comprehensive partners.
