Floods wreak havoc in central region

(VOVWORLD) - A local resident was killed by floods in Quang Ngai province on Sunday evening and local authorities are still searching for three fishermen whose basket boat sank in the Tra Bong River on Sunday, according to the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

The provinces of Thua Thien—Hue, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai have evacuated more than 4,800 people to safer places from badly flooded areas and areas at risk of landslides. Evacuated people in Hue have returned home.

On Sunday, in Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province, hundreds of cubic meters of soil and rock fell onto a road, causing traffic jams. Nguyen Danh Tien, Director of the Road Management Sub-Department, said that rescue crews cleared the road, and it is now open to vehicles.

“After the landslide, we rescued two cars stuck in the rock pile. Vehicles, equipment, and crews have been mobilized to clean up the mud in two days,” said Mr. Tien.

The National Weather Center said a tropical depression may strengthen into a storm near the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago on Monday morning, generating strong winds moving over the sea from Binh Dinh to Binh Thuan central provinces.
