(VOVWORLD) - South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, host of the 2025 G20 Summit, said on Friday that the Summit will issue a Joint Declaration despite opposition from the US administration.
The 2025 G20 Summit, themed “Unity, Equality and Sustainable Development,” is taking place on Saturday and Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This is the first G20 Summit to be held in Africa since the group of leading developed and emerging economies was founded in 1999. This year’s event is attended by leaders or high-level representatives from more than 40 countries, including member states and invited guests.
However, the next host of the G20 Summit, the US, has announced it will not participate. Moreover, US officials have urged South Africa not to issue a joint declaration.
Despite this, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said this year’s G20 Summit will release a Joint Declaration. In a statement quoted by South African media on Saturday, President Ramaphosa expressed regret over the US absence and its pressure regarding the declaration, but stressed G20 Summit will be a declaration.
