(VOVworld) – Israel and Hamas agreed to extend the Gaza ceasefire by another 24 hours, minutes before the 5-day truce was set to expire.

The extension allows continuation of talks in Cairo on a long-term deal. Hamas confirmed the extension but criticized Israel for not supporting the peace process. A Palestinian official said the move will give negotiators on both sides more time to discuss thorny issues blocking a more permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The Russian Itar-Tass news agency quoted a source in the Palestinian delegation as saying that Israel and Hamas have agreed in principle to extend the ceasefire for an additional month, but that will depend on controversial issues like the building a seaport and an airport in Gaza, releasing Palestinian prisoners, and returning the remains of two missing Israeli soldiers.
