At a conference of the Christian Social Union (CSU) on Wednesday in Bayern, Mr. Maiziere said he would support extending the German- Austrian border control. He said Germany wants a Schengen zone free of border controls but it also wants sustainable control of the EU’s external borders.
The German border control was extended for 6 months in May, 2016, to curb the thousands of illegal immigrants entering Germany through the Bayern border gate. The German political parties disagree deeply over migrant policy. The Christian Social Union (CSU), a party linked with Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU), has proposed a policy which is harsher than the measures set by Merkel.
