Government works to make southeast region Vietnam’s leading development hub

(VOVWORLD) - “New mindset, new breakthroughs, and new values” are needed to make the southeastern region a leading economic and financial hub in Vietnam, said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at a conference in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province on Saturday.

A Party Politburo resolution on socio-economic development and national defense and security in the southeast said that the region should record average Gross Regional Domestic Product of between 8% and 8.5% in the 2021-2030 period.

The conference also included an exhibition featuring the southeastern region’s land, people, culture and products.

“The southeastern region should have faster economic growth, higher GDP per capita than other regions, and higher human development index, even on a par with more developed countries," said PM Chinh.

"It should have the best regional and international connectivity and minimize the impact of climate change,” he noted.

The PM also wants the southeastern region to become Vietnam’s leading center for trade, service,  education, technology, innovation, and digital transformation.

The region consists of HCM city and 5 provinces including Binh Duong, Dong Nai, and Ba Ria-Vung Tau. It accounts for 2 thirds of Vietnam's state budget collection.
