Granma routinely publishes electoral information for other countries, but this is the first time it has done so for the United States, according to a US embassy official. This seen as a positive step to improve ties since the two countries normalized diplomatic relations in July, 2015, after decades of hostility.
Speaking at the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly on the same day, US President Barack Obama said he believes that the US Congress will lift its Cuban trade embargo, which now has no meaning. His remarks were hailed by other leaders, including Cuban President Raul Castro.
