Ho Chi Minh City's fertility rate falls alarmingly

(VOVWORLD) - The fertility rate in Ho Chi Minh City is now at an alarmingly low level with a woman having 1.39 children on average, significantly lower than Vietnam's replacement-level fertility of 2.09 children, according to the General Office for Population and Family Planning.

At a conference in response to the National Action Month on Population and Vietnam Population Day held in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday, participants warned that fertility rate will continue to decline sharply and directly affect the population structure of the city.

The current sex ratio at birth is 106.4 boys for every 100 girls. The imbalance in the sex ratio at birth is controlled effectively by the city, but if proactive intervention measures are not maintained, the sex ratio at birth in the city will worsen, the conference said.
