International community hails inter-Korea agreement

(VOVworld) – The international community hailed an agreement that has de-escalated tensions on the Korean peninsula. The Yonhap news agency quoted Kim Young-woo, the spokesman for the South Korean ruling party “Saenuri” as saying that the agreement is good and highly welcome.

North Korea and South Korea negotiators meet inside the demilitarised zone for the tense talks

A spokesperson for the New Politics Alliance for Democracy, South Korea’s opposition, said that the agreement had not only de-escalated tensions on the Korean peninsula, but also paved the way for improving inter-Korean relations. South Korean analysts said that the agreement showed the two countries’ determination to put an end to their conflict.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that he hoped inter-Korean dialogue would become an effective mechanism in resolving conflict and help resume talks with North Korea.
John Kirby, the spokesman for the US Department of State, said that the US welcomed the agreement and supported efforts to improve inter-Korean relations.
Addressing a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that he hoped the agreement would de-escalate tension in the region and help lead towards solutions to other remaining issues.
