Iran and EU attempt to revive nuclear negotiations

(VOVWORLD) - Iran said Wednesday that it met in Qatar with European Union mediator Enrique Mora in an effort to revive its 2015 nuclear pact with world powers, as Tehran and Washington seek to cool tensions with a mutual "understanding" to help end the deadlock.

Iranian chief nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani said on Twitter that he had a serious and constructive meeting with Mora in Doha. The two exchanged views and discussed a range of issues including negotiations on sanctions lifting, said Bagheri Kani.

Iran and P5+1 signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in July 2015, but the US ditched the pact in 2018 and reimposed sanctions that have crippled the Iranian economy. In response, Iran has dropped its commitments to the pact.

Negotiations to revive the JCPOA began in April 2021 in Vienna, but little progress has been made.
