Palestinian media outlets are reporting that the Israel Defense Force is currently striking Gaza City with warplanes, artillery, and drones. The attacks are causing massive explosions. Casualties and damage from the attacks have not yet been reported. The strike on Gaza City comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is visiting Israel, with the Gaza war high on his agenda.
At a press conference in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Rubio said Hamas no longer existing as an armed entity is a prerequisite to peace for the people of Gaza.
In Doha, Arab and Muslim leaders held an emergency summit on Israel’s recent military actions, including a September 9 attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar. A joint statement from the summit urged all states to take all possible legal and effective measures to prevent Israel from continuing its actions against the Palestinian people. The statement also urged states to coordinate efforts aimed at suspending Israel’s membership in the United Nations. They rejected plans to resettle Palestinians and urged global support to rebuild Gaza.
A virtual meeting took place on Monday in which the leaders of Canada, France, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, and the UK discussed the Middle East. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement that the focus must remain on peace and security, reaching a lasting ceasefire, securing the release of all hostages and the disarmament of Hamas, and scaling up life-saving assistance to Palestinian civilians.
