Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu brought the declaration to a vote in cabinet, which unanimously approved it, according to a statement.

Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly meeting that the move comes after recent talk in the international community about an attempt to unilaterally impose a Palestinian state.

During the 37th African Union (AU) summit on Saturday, African leaders urged an immediate end to the Palestine-Israel conflict, and called for international solidarity with Palestine.

It is paramount to recognize the Palestinians' inherent right to establish an independent state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in alignment with pertinent resolutions of international legitimacy, said Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, AU chairperson for 2024 and Mauritania’s President.

He expressed concern about the international community's hesitancy to exert the necessary influence for an immediate ceasefire, aid delivery, and establishment of a comprehensive and enduring solution.
