Japanese and Chinese government delegations are expected to discuss economic issues of mutual interest as well as ways to cooperate. This economic dialogue is part of the framework of the Japan-China High-Level Economic Dialogue that was launched in 2007 under then Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The two countries' previous working-level economic dialogue was held in March 2011. Bilateral ministerial economic dialogue was last held in August 2010.
