The force will closely watch ships and airplanes in the area through its mobile radar surveillance systems. Japan is enhancing defense on Nansei island in its Southwestern region. Other units of the Ground Self-Defense Force were also established on Miyako and Ishigaki islands in Okinawa prefecture and Amami-Oshima island in Kagoshima prefecture.

The Senkaku/ Diaoyu islands are located 400 kilometers from Okinawa’s main island and controlled by Japan. China also claimed sovereignty over these islands and regularly sends ships and airplanes to the area.
