Japan, RoK to resume security talks in April

(VOVworld) - Japan and the Republic of Korea have agreed to resume a long-stalled security dialogue in late April on the current status of the Korean Peninsula and the East Asian region, bilateral diplomatic sources said Saturday.

At a meeting in Seoul last month, foreign ministers of both nations agreed to hold the dialogue at the earliest convenience.

The dialogue is expected to focus on the views of Japan and the Republic of Korea on the current East Asian situation and similarities in those viewpoints. Junichi Ihara, Director General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, and Lee Sang-deok, Director General of Korean Northeast Asian Affairs Bureau, are likely to attend the dialogue.

Talks between senior diplomats and defense officials of Japan and the Republic of Korea have been suspended since December, 2009, due to historical disagreements. One of major issues is that Korean women were conscripted as comfort women who served in Japanese military brothels.
