During his talk with Prime Minister Lee, Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hailed the late Prime Minister's contributions to the development of Asia, and said he hopes relations between Singapore and Japan will continue to thrive. Mr. Lee said he has valued the ties between the two countries over the past 50 years, and said it’s a great honor for him and his family to receive this honor from the Japanese government.
The two sides agreed to work together to tighten sanctions against North Korea following Pyongyang’s recent missile launches and nuclear tests. Prime Minister Abe suggested Japan's Shinkansen “bullet” train technology for use in a planned high-speed railway linking Singapore and the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.
